By: Christine, July 2024
The xTool P2 laser cutter is a robust machine suited for both hobbyists and small businesses. It operates through subtractive manufacturing, cutting away material to create intricate designs and art.
What We Liked:
Speed and Precision: The P2 is incredibly fast and accurate, significantly reducing production time. For example, it cut a wooden book in just 21 minutes, compared to 207 minutes by a smaller laser cutter.
Material Versatility: It can cut and etch a wide range of materials, including wood, cardboard, acrylic, brass, anodized aluminum, glass, and even food items like pumpkin pie.
High-Quality Build: The machine has a premium finish, with features like a pneumatic lid and an LED indicator for safety, distinguishing it from cheaper models.
Software Capabilities: The software supports various image files (DXF, SVG) and includes tools for background removal and image conversion. It also features an AI image generator and a QR code generator.
Large Work Area: The P2 offers a 26 x 14-inch work area, accommodating larger projects.
Cooling System: The CO2 laser requires a cooling system, which uses a reservoir filled with distilled water and antifreeze to maintain optimal performance.
Adaptability: It can be used with an additional conveyor belt system for continuous cuts, making it ideal for long or multiple small projects.
Setup Flexibility: Post-initial setup, it supports both wired and wireless connections.
What We Didn't Like:
What We Didn't Like:
No On-Machine Control Panel: It lacks a direct interface, which means all controls must be managed via the connected computer.
Camera Quality: The built-in cameras have a fish-eye effect, which can distort edges, making precise alignment challenging.
Initial Setup Complexity: The machine is heavy and requires a team for installation. The initial setup also necessitates a physical connection to a computer.
Space Requirement: The conveyor system needs ample space for effective use.
Lack of Project Time Estimates: The software does not provide estimated cut times, which can be inconvenient for time management.
To Sum It Up
Overall, the xTool P2 is a powerful tool that can turn a hobby into a profitable business, despite its higher price point and some operational limitations. Its speed, precision, and versatility make it a solid investment for those looking to enhance their crafting capabilities.
